Craig Kirchhoff

Craig Kirchhoff is professor of conducting and director of university bands at the University of Minnesota, where he conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Professor Kirchhoff coordinates the wind ensemble-band conducting graduated program and guides all aspects of the University of Minnesota Band program. Born and educated in Wisconsin, he brings to his position a wide knowledge of both traditional and contemporary literature. He has won critical acclaim from composers Henry Brant, Michael Colgrass, Warren Benson, Karl Husa, George Perle, Vincent Persichetti, Verne Reynolds, Gunther Schuller, Joseph Schwanter, Elliott Schwartz, and others.

Prior to his appointments to the faculty of the University of Minnesota, Professor Kirchhoff served in a similar capacity as director of bands at Ohio State University for 14 years. He was the recipient of the Ohio State University Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award and the Ohio State University School of Music Distinguished Teaching Award. Professor Kirchhoff is past president of the College Band Directors National Association, is a member of the World Associated of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles and the Music Educators College Band Directors National Association Journal.

Professor Kirchhoff has appeared as a guest conductor, clinician, and lecturer throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. He is a frequent guest conductor of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and has recorded with them and has recorded with them on the Kosei Publishing Company label.
