The Pentagon Memorial is designed to honor the 184 people whose lives were lost at the Pentagon and on American Airlines flight 77. At the dedication ceremony for the Memorial, Donald Rumsfeld said, "We will never forget the way this huge building shook. We will not forget our colleagues and friends who were taken from us and their families. And we will not forget what that deadly attack has meant for our nation."

Interesting Facts:

  • The Memorial is three inches tall at its lowest point, representing the youngest person killed and continues to a height of 71 inches, corresponding to the oldest victim.
  • It includes 184 bench-like structures (called memorial units), each one dedicated to a victim.
  • The memorial units are laid out in a pattern according to the year of each victim’s birth and each includes the inscribed name of the victim.
